The Papoutsakis lab has three Forma anaerobic chamber systems (Model 1025) that facilitate culturing, examination and testing of strict anaerobes. Each chamber is made of stainless steel and has a plastic front panel with gloves. A pass-through gas interchange allows for the quick transfer of materials in and out of the anaerobic chamber following an auto-sequence six stage cycles of gas exchange. A pump (Gast model 0823-101Q-G608NEX) connected to the chamber cycles the artificial atmosphere gases from a gas cylinder into the chamber. The anaerobic atmosphere is composed of 5% hydrogen, 10% carbon dioxide, and the balance of nitrogen. The chamber is equipped with three wafers – charcoal, palladium catalyst, and desiccant – that facilitate the removal of trace oxygen, ensuring that the contents remain anaerobic. The chamber is also equipped with an incubator and internal thermostat, as well as power outlets and shelves.
